What Nobody Tells You About Getting Older

What does "next level aging" actually look like?
In this episode of the Inspired Caring Podcast, I sit down with my mom, Deborah Ferris, for a very honest conversation about the realities of getting older. We talk about the things that can sneak up on us, from changes in strength and vision to driving, mobility, social connection, independence, and the emotional experience of realizing that some things simply aren't the way they used to be.
This conversation isn't about fearing aging. It's about understanding it. When we have a little more awareness and empathy for what changes, we can make thoughtful plans for ourselves and offer more grace to the people we love.
✨ A Quote to Sit With

I love this reminder because aging can challenge the story we have about ourselves. We may think, I'm not that old, or I should still be able to do this, or why is this suddenly so difficult? But instead of getting stuck in those thoughts, we can get curious about what is actually happening and ask ourselves what we can do to adapt, strengthen, prepare, or ask for help.
🧭 A Helpful Resource
Have a "Next Level Aging" conversation with yourself.
Take a few minutes to think about the areas of life that may change as you get older:
- Mobility: How will I maintain my strength and balance?
- Vision and hearing: Am I paying attention to changes instead of ignoring them?
- Driving: What might transportation look like if I eventually need to limit or stop driving?
- Home: Is my current environment going to support the way I want to live?
- Social connection: Who are the people I can rely on, and am I continuing to build new relationships?
- Support: Who could I call if I needed help?
- Future care: Have I thought about what I might want if I eventually need more assistance?
You don't need to have every answer today. The goal is simply to start thinking ahead so that future changes don't feel quite so overwhelming when they arrive.
🌿 The C.A.R.I.N.G. Framework © Reflection

One of the biggest lessons from my conversation with my mom is that planning for aging isn't just about health. It's about creating a network of resources that supports the life you want to continue living.
That might mean finding ways to maintain strength, exploring transportation options, thinking about where you want to live, developing friendships with people of different ages, or simply becoming more comfortable asking for help.
And as family members and caregivers, our role isn't necessarily to tell someone what they should be doing. Sometimes it's more helpful to offer support, stay curious, and meet them where they are.
