When Hearing Becomes a Barrier to Connection

One of the most common frustrations I hear from caregivers is, “I feel like I’m constantly repeating myself.”
And just as often, I hear loved ones say, “Everyone mumbles,” or “I can’t understand what’s being said.”

In this episode of the Inspired Caring podcast, I spoke with Janie York, a hearing instrument specialist, about how hearing loss often goes unnoticed — and how it can quietly impact communication, connection, and emotional well-being for both caregivers and those they care for.

What stood out to me most in this conversation is how often hearing challenges are mistaken for stubbornness, confusion, or even cognitive decline — when, in reality, the issue may be something very fixable.

✨ A Quote to Sit With

“Sometimes people aren’t ignoring you — they simply can’t hear you. And that can be incredibly frustrating and embarrassing for them.”

This is such an important reminder. When hearing becomes a barrier, shame and frustration often step in — on both sides of the conversation.

🧭 A Helpful Resource

Basic Hearing Check for Caregivers

If your loved one uses hearing aids:

  • Look closely to see if the openings are clogged with debris

  • Check that the battery is working and the correct size

  • Gently clean with a soft, dry toothbrush (openings facing down)

If they don’t use hearing aids:

  • Watch for frequent “what?” responses

  • Notice delays in answering

  • Reduce background noise and face them when speaking

Sometimes small adjustments make a big difference.

🌿 C.A.R.I.N.G. Framework Reflection

A — Assess

This episode connects beautifully to Assess in the C.A.R.I.N.G. framework.

Before reacting in frustration, pause and assess:

  • Is this a hearing issue?

  • Is there background noise?

  • Do they have my attention before I speak?

Assessment isn’t about blame — it’s about curiosity and compassion.

Self-care reminder: When communication feels hard, it doesn’t mean you’re failing. It may simply mean it’s time to reassess what support is needed — for them and for you.
