When Is It Time?

There’s a question many caregivers carry quietly:

When is it time?

When is it time to move from home to assisted living?
When is it time to admit that what used to work just isn’t working anymore?

In this episode of the Inspired Caring podcast, I spoke with Nikki Wulff, Owner and Eldercare Advisor of Assisted Living Locators. Nikki helps families navigate these decisions every day. What we both see is that it’s rarely one dramatic moment. More often, it’s a series of small changes that begin to add up.

Frequent falls.
Missed medications.
Weight loss.
Confusion with finances.
Multiple ER visits.

And sometimes, just as importantly, a caregiver who is completely exhausted.

This decision is never simple. But asking the question is not a failure. It’s an act of awareness.

✨ A Quote to Sit With

“You are not giving up. You are responding to what is real.”

I’ve heard so many spouses and adult children say, “I promised I would keep them at home.” And that promise matters. But your own health matters too. Choosing a different level of care is not breaking a vow, it’s making a thoughtful decision rooted in safety and love.

🧭 A Helpful Resource

If you’re unsure whether it’s time, consider speaking with a senior living advisor or care navigator in your area.

Even one conversation can:

  • Clarify what levels of care actually mean

  • Help you understand pricing and options

  • Provide an outside perspective during emotional decision-making

Planning before a crisis doesn’t mean you’re rushing. It means you’re preparing.

A — Assess

This episode connects deeply with Assess in The C.A.R.I.N.G. Framework ©.

Pause and gently ask yourself:

  • Is my loved one safe in their current environment?

  • Are there repeated falls or emergency visits?

  • Are medications being managed properly?

  • Am I able to continue caregiving in a way that protects my own well-being?

Assessment is not judgment. It’s awareness.
And awareness allows you to move forward intentionally rather than reactively.
